KiScon!

It feels like only a few hours ago I was loading up the car for KiScon, and now I've just finished unpacking after getting home in the early hours of yesterday morning.

When awarrington first suggested to me that we do a UK con, I was worried that we would struggle to top last year, but amazingly I actually enjoyed this one even more than last year's. I guess being on the same continent made it a bit less stressful to run, but most of all the venue was so much more cooperative than the Kyoto was, so this time I was actually able to relax a bit and even made it to a panel or two!

Pic and vid-heavy con report!Collapse )

3 new Kirk/Spock recs added to my recs site:

  • Reboot Mine by Dawn_twilight- ADULT

A short-sweet PWP. Just the thing if you need a quick pick-me-up.

  • TOS I Should Have Gone Left by Fugitive

Author summary: In the movie STV, Kirk tells Sybok that he knows there have been instances in his life when he has gone right when he should have gone left. A lovely series of moments where things could have happened and didn't. I especially like the understated post-TMP resolution.

  • TOS A Computer And A Plan by Mary Kay- ADULT

Spock sets out to seduce Kirk, and comes up with what is basically my idea of the perfect date - dinner in a tacky theme restaurant and musical theatre! I love forward-but-hesitant Spock.

Woohoo! Worked this time. The havoc a missing full stop in your code can cause!

2 new Star Trek recs added to my recs site:

  • Reboot Arena (the Walk Without Rhythm remix), PG-13 by chosenmortal

A reboot of the TOS episode Arena, which makes far more sense than the original episode. Deliciously plotty with a clever resolution, and a nice subcurrent of K/S.

  • Reboot The Morning After the Earthquake by ladyblahblah- ADULT

This is truly, gut-wrenchingly horrible, and the first time I read it I couldn't bear to rec it. I came back to it recently, though, and, argh, it still destroyed me. Spock is meant to be marrying Uhura, but he wakes up on his wedding day with Kirk. There's no way this can end well for anyone involved, but what I like about it is the sense that Kirk and Spock have this inescapable destiny that's usually played in a happy romantic way, but in this case is tragic.

3 new Star Trek recs added to my recs site:

  • Reboot A Thousand Furlongs of Sea by ashkitty

The crew get transported to an Enterprise on the high seas in an alternative history, and Kirk and Spock get to resolve some issues. Really nicely written adventure story with a side-helping of K/S.

  • Mirror Tiger Burning Bright by Carolyn Spencer- ADULT

The story of how Kirk and Spock meet in the Mirrorverse. Much softer than your average Mirrorverse story (which is why I was able to read it!). I really enjoyed the slow wearing down of barriers once Spock arrived.

  • Reboot Artistry by corpus_invictus- ADULT

Can't believe I somehow missed this one! Henna hand art + Vulcan hands = a mighty steamy PWP :-)

I can't believe it's only three and a half months until KiScon!

Just wanted to mention a couple of things you may or may not have seen (apologies if you have!) about this year's convention.

Firstly, we're letting the members vote on which programme items they want to see at the con. There are about 40 to choose from - far more than we can fit into one weekend! - ranging from the sociological impact of Star Trek to the much-debated issue of Spock's virginity. There are also talks on the history of artwork in the fandom, fanvids, newfangled photomanips - and yes, I'm offering to geek out about science again. If anyone wants me to ;-)

To cast your vote you need to be registered for the convention; if you are, you should already have received the login details for the website (if not, please prod me). If you haven't yet signed up, here's a handy link. Go on, you know you want to.

As an added bonus, that link even works now! Yeah...so it was just pointed out to me today that last time I updated the code I sort of broke it. Sorry! So if you tried to sign up recently and got a blank screen and no email confirmation, please go and sign up again, and I owe you a drink at the con.

Also! A gentle reminder that we're now down to just two rooms in the main building. We have extended the overall limit so that we don't have to turn anyone away from the con, but once those two rooms are gone any further accommodation will be in a different building. It's all on the same site and only a short walk, but, well, it's not a proper convention if you have to wear shoes, is it?

We're also taking submissions for the con zine and for the art and vid shows, and you don't have to attend the con to submit to any of these (it's recommended, of course, but we know the fandom is spread all over the world and those lazy physicists have yet to come up with a viable transporter).

Speaking of which, I should really start on my zine submission. No idea what I'm doing yet, except that it will be Kirk/Spock (obvs!) and probably TOS movieverse... just, y'know, for a change...

2 new Star Trek recs added to my recs site:

  • TOS Associations by aldora89- ADULT

Post-TMP shore leave in which Kirk and Spock spend some time alone to find their feet in their post-"simple feeling" relationship. Spock is eager but hesitant, and this leads to some delightful awkwardness.

  • Reboot The Best Laid Plans by notboldly

Concern for Spock leads Jim to try a spot of consolation via a pseudonym on the Starfleet equivalent of match.com. It all goes very You've Got Mail, and is really quite adorable. I actually like Reboot!Jim in this; I found what he does to be quite cruel, but unintentionally so, and it all works out okay. I love how much he cares, even though - at the start of the fic - he and Spock aren't even close.
